Handyman license requirements in Wisconsin

By PlainJob · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer: Wisconsin has no handyman license. If your work needs a building permit on a one- or two-family home, you need a Dwelling Contractor credential and a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier from DSPS. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC always need a license.

General information, not legal advice. Checked October 13, 2026 against the sources below. Rules change, so confirm with the agency before you take a job.

Dwelling Contractor credential

Wisconsin doesn't set a statewide dollar limit. The question is whether the job needs a building permit. Pulling permits for work on one- and two-family homes requires a Dwelling Contractor credential for the business, backed by a bond or liability insurance, and a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier, a person who has completed state-approved training. Painting, drywall patching and other non-permit work don't need either. Each town sets when an alteration needs a permit, so check with your local building inspector.

Trade work

Electrical, plumbing and HVAC work need separate state credentials from the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), regardless of job size.
