What to put on a handyman invoice

An invoice gets paid faster when the customer doesn't have to call you to understand it. Include these:

  1. Your business name and contact details. Phone and email at the top, so questions come to you, not to a review site.
  2. An invoice number and date. Number them in order. Your bookkeeper, and the IRS, will thank you.
  3. The customer and job address. Landlords and property managers pay many addresses; make it obvious which one this is.
  4. The same line items as the quote. If they approved it, repeat it word for word. Add any extra work as its own line, agreed before you did it.
  5. Sales tax on its own line, if your state charges it on your work or materials.
  6. Any deposit already paid, and the balance still due, so nobody pays twice.
  7. When it's due and how to pay. "Due on receipt. Cash, check, Zelle or Venmo." One line removes most of the back-and-forth.

Getting paid faster

Need a quote first?

Use the free handyman quote maker to price the job before you start. Same layout, so the invoice matches what your customer approved.

Stop retyping the quote as an invoice.

In PlainJob, the quote your customer approved becomes the invoice in one tap, with the due date set for you. Home shows what's overdue so nothing slips. $39 a month for up to 3 people.

Questions

Is the invoice maker really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no limit. Fill it in, then print it or save it as a PDF.

Do you save what I type?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to us. If you close the page, the invoice is gone, so save the PDF first.

How do I send the invoice to my customer?

Tap Print or save as PDF and save it. Then text or email the PDF from your phone like any photo or file.

What payment terms should a handyman use?

Most small jobs are due on receipt. For bigger jobs, many handymen take a deposit up front and invoice the balance due within 14 days. Whatever you choose, put it on the invoice.

Can customers pay the invoice online?

Not with this free tool. PlainJob, our job app, is adding card and bank payments from the invoice link at launch, with no markup on Stripe's fees.
