Home Improvement Contractor registration
If you do repair or improvement work on homes and a job is worth more than $200, you need a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration from the Department of Consumer Protection. There's no exam. You register online, pay an annual fee that includes a guaranty fund contribution, and renew each year. Home improvement contracts must be in writing and include the cancellation notice the law requires.
Trade work
Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and similar trades need separate DCP licenses and aren't covered by an HIC registration.
