Handyman license requirements in New Jersey

By PlainJob · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer: New Jersey has no handyman license, but anyone in the business of home improvement must register with the Division of Consumer Affairs, and there's no small-job exemption. Electrical and plumbing need their own state licenses.

General information, not legal advice. Checked October 13, 2026 against the sources below. Rules change, so confirm with the agency before you take a job.

Home Improvement Contractor registration

Under New Jersey's Contractors' Registration Act, anyone in the business of making or selling home improvements must register as a Home Improvement Contractor with the Division of Consumer Affairs. There's no dollar amount below which you can skip it. Registration requires commercial general liability insurance, and home improvement contracts over $500 must be in writing.

New Jersey has been updating its home improvement rules, so check the Division of Consumer Affairs for the current requirements before you apply or renew.

Trade work

Electrical work needs a license from the Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, and plumbing needs one from the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers. Home improvement registration doesn't cover either.
