Handyman license requirements in Utah

By PlainJob · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer: Utah lets handymen take small jobs that don't need a building permit without a contractor license, under a per-project dollar limit (reported as $3,000, labor and materials together). Larger jobs need a filing or license with DOPL.

General information, not legal advice. Checked October 13, 2026 against the sources below. Rules change, so confirm with the agency before you take a job.

The handyman exemption

Utah's Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) exempts small jobs from contractor licensing when the total project value, labor and materials together, stays under a set limit (reported as $3,000 per project) and the work doesn't need a building permit. You can't split a project to stay under the limit, and you can't advertise as a contractor. Above that, DOPL requires a handyman filing with proof of liability insurance, and larger jobs need a full contractor license. The limits have changed in recent years, so confirm the current numbers with DOPL.

Trade work

Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and gas work need a specialty license at any job size.
